A centrifugal compressor is a type of dynamic compressor that uses the principle of centrifugal force to increase the pressure of a gas. These compressors are widely used in industries where large volumes of air or gas need to be compressed efficiently, such as in HVAC systems, gas turbines, refrigeration plants, and petrochemical industries.

How a Centrifugal Compressor Works

The working of a centrifugal compressor is based on converting kinetic energy into pressure energy:

1. Air Inlet – Gas or air enters the compressor through the inlet section at low pressure.


2. Impeller Action – The rotating impeller blades accelerate the gas outward at high velocity using centrifugal force.


3. Diffuser Section – The high-velocity gas enters the diffuser, where the velocity decreases, and pressure increases according to Bernoulli’s principle.


4. Discharge – The compressed gas is discharged at the required pressure.



In simple terms, the impeller throws the air outward like a spinning fan, and the diffuser slows it down to convert speed into pressure.

Main Components of a Centrifugal Compressor

Impeller: The rotating part that imparts velocity to the gas.

Diffuser: A stationary component that converts velocity into pressure.

Casing: Encloses the impeller and diffuser, ensuring safe and efficient gas flow.

Inlet Guide Vanes: Regulate the airflow into the impeller for efficiency.

Bearings & Shaft: Support and transmit power to the impeller.

Oil-Free Air – In many designs, there is no oil contact with the compressed gas.
